| Battle of the Bands - Curtain Club, 05/27/07 Live music in Deep Ellum? With the once-great music area being a mere shell of what it used to be, it's exciting to see the Curtain Club surviving. Thanks to a battle of the bands event, hosted by Gorilla Productions, several groups played to the light crowd throughout the afternoon and early Sunday evening. The genres were varied, covering everything from rock, to synth, to reggae. Kilamanjaro,an Addison three-piece, stood out from the rest. Though Jim Campo's guitar work could leave most others in the dust, he gets major points off for blasphemous comments regarding Star Wars. Before playing a killer version of "The Imperial March (Darth Vader's Theme)," he stated the tune was from a famous movie "from the 60's or 70's." if a band is going to cover such a classic movie track, they MUST know the year it was from – 1977. Another highlight came from Jerry Markham, a one-man band, surrounded by synthesizers. Sounding just like Howard Jones, it was no surprise he covered Jones' tune "Equality". "Stranded on The Moon" was a true gem and an excellent song with which to close his set. Jason Janik |
